It wasn't long ago that I went Hands-On with the Royal Oak A2, the earliest known production Royal Oak, when it came to auction at Phillips Geneva earlier this year in May. I thought I had seen it all. But, apparently, there's an even earlier batch of four Royal Oak examples somewhere out in the world – and instead of the characteristic stainless steel construction, these prototype examples are made of precious white gold.

The 30CP's movement pays off all those years working for the legends. Lass draws inspiration from sprouting leaves to inform the design of his balance bridge. He also moves it from its normal position, resulting in an empty space. He fills the void with some engraving and a stud holder from the end of the hairspring fixed to a smaller bridge. At three o'clock the subdial is a little more simple, with the number of the day and an indicator of whether it's a short or long day. Your normal moonphase subdial can be found at six o'clock, and at nine o'clock is the month number plus an indicator that will show a "+" if a 13th month is needed.

But this is Rolex's most serious dive watch, why would it remove the Fliplock clasp? It would seem that of all the Rolex divers to need a feature like this, it would be the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea, but now it's gone. Maybe Rolex got word that customers weren't using them, maybe this addition made the watch too heavy. The "why"  remains unknown just as the Fliplock remains a thing of the past.
